The Age Old Question Why Do People Dream?

This question is as old as time itself. In fact, the curiosity of the study of dreams goes back way to Biblical times. The reason behind the question Why Do People Dream, all varies on the individual. In the Bible, God would give his prophets dreams to help them discover what HE wanted them to do. The first dream ever recorded was in 1900 B.C.E. when the Greeks and Romans would record their dreams before they went into battle. It was believed that dreams would lead them to victory. The purpose of dreams in this time then, was to foretell the future.

The beginning of the 20th century saw dreams take an entire new level with the new dream prophet of Sigmund Freud. Freuds dream work was exceptional and was part of what gave him the recognition he still holds today. Freud believed that dreams were a symbol of repressed sexual desires. The reason, according to Freud then, that people dream is that the mind was working out sexual urges in the dream world that it was afraid to in the real world. This was an exceptional theory, but in contemporary times, far too simplified to answer the age old question.

So, why do people dream then, really! Researchers have found that Freud was not to far off. In fact, all humans have been blessed with the ability to dream as it is a way of coping with the struggles and joys of daily life. The dream world we experience is a response to things that happen in our lives. Sometimes, these events are too much to deal with, so we repress them. Our dreams do the work for us by playing out the scenarios in a subconscious manner. Dreams can tell us things about ourselves that we are not aware of for this very reason.

Dreams can also simply be a reminder of an event that day. Have you ever seen something on TV, or out while you were shopping, and didnt think anything of it. And then, oddly enough, you dreamed about this inconsequential thing? This is called a day residue. It is simply a recap from your brain going through the days events, from an interpretation perspective, it means nothing.

Why do people dream? We dream because it is a gift we as humans have been given to cope with things we may not want to cope with, or do not understand. Our dreams then, are our subconscious expression of us.
