Do People Dream in Color

Dreams are a subject of much interest to both the field of science and to the layperson, and color in dreams is one of the most important aspects of dream life. What do symbols in dreams mean? Sometimes I dream in color and sometimes I dont, what does this MEAN? Do people dream in color? Or are all dreams in black and white? Dreaming in color is of great concern to many people quite often because it is the one element of a dream that people remember the most. So is there a concrete answer to the question, do people dream in color?

No, there is not a concrete answer to that question, as researchers and psychologists all vary on their personal and academic opinions to the dream experience. People DO in fact dream in color as is evidenced by the many self-reports of dream experiences that report color in dreams. But it is not as simple as that. Does everyone dream in color? Are colored dreams ALL in color or just in representations in the dream? Again, this is where the answer gets sketchy, and the answers are all as unique as the dreamers themselves.

Most researchers will agree that a lot of dreams occur in color. Many dreams are not remembered as such because the dream will fade upon awakening and thus the dream is recalled in gray tones as if you were watching it on black and white TV. Sometimes one or two elements will stand out in your dream as having a specific color. Dream researchers will say that these elements, as well as their colors, are significant points to remember about what your dreams mean. The colors mean something. When only spots of color are noted in your dream, it is quite often a symbol of something emotional you are going through, and this color is a representation of something you are processing internally.

So, is there an answer to Do people dream in color? Some researchers also say that people with a tendency to be more creative will dream ONLY in color and remember their dreams as such. This could be their creative side painting their dream for themselves, or it could simply be an expression of their creativity. As such however, when dreams are only remembered in color, it is much more difficult to interpret them because the odd splash of color will tell the interpreter more about the dream than a dream entirely in color.
